Newburgh Illuminated back for a 7th year It’s back for a seventh year – with a little something for everyone. The Newburgh Illuminated Festival Newburgh will celebrate the dynamism of one of the Hudson Valley’s most historic and diverse communities on Saturday June 1 from noon to 10pm. A day of art, music, dance, poetry, theater, multicultural food, and many other indoor and outdoor events, the festival will stretch along Broadway between Grand and Johnston Sts. and also down Liberty St. from Broadway to Washington Street Performers will grace three stages as craft vendors, performance artists, activities for children, and more will all be a part of the free – and rain or shine – festivities. Newburgh native and Grammy- nominated performer, Pardison Fontaine, will hit the main stage at noon. A musician who has co-written chart-toppers with artists such as Cardi B and Kanye West, his single “Backin’ It Up” blazed the Billboard Hot 100 in 2018. Other local performers include poet/ rap artist Decora and soulful singer Tamy Stevens – both Newburgh natives. Common Tongue, a Beacon-based jazz group will be one of the almost 40 bands performing throughout the day. In addition to the music stages, the family- and pet-friendly event will also feature the DD Theater Lab with NFA Drama; a dance stage with local, regional and national performers and choreographers from noon to 6pm; a fashion show; an art tent featuring works for sale and display by local artists; special activities for children on the Washington’s Headquarters lawn and musical guests at the Wherehouse? (located at the corner of Liberty and Washington Streets.) New this year is The Spoken Word Stage, which will be hosted by 2017 and 2018 Dutchess County Poet Laureate, Bettina “Poet Gold” Wilkerson. She will also host the main stage near Broadway and Grand St. for the fifth year in a row. The festival was the brainchild of former Newburgh mayor, Judy Kennedy, who passed away in April of 2018. During this year’s festival, an award for community activism and dedication will be given in her honor to Newburgh Free Library director Chuck Thomas. Free shuttle bus transportation to and from the Beacon train station, coinciding with train arrivals from New York City and Poughkeepsie will be provided from 12:25pm through 11:55pm for those traveling via Metro North Railroad.
