Ninth annual Taste of Greater Newburgh satisfies the palates
By GARY M. AYD
The annual tour de force of local
culinary gems “A Taste of Greater
Newburgh” was again a resounding
success Sunday. Hosted by Mount Saint
Mary College ‘Under the Tent’ in the heart
of Newburgh, the show was a bargain at
just $30 entry.
The event was once again organized
and sponsored by the Greater Newburgh
Rotary Club and proceeds will go to benefit
many local organizations including: The
Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity,
Meals on Wheels and others. A more
complete list of beneficiaries can be found
at tasteofgreaternewburgh.com.
This year’s event was attended by
approximately 250 community members
,27 vendors and primality figures estimate
total money raised to be between $9,000$13,000.
Among the food vendors in attendance
were Cafe Spice, Hudson View Cafe, Baja
328, Newburgh Brewing Company, the
Pizza Shop and Bliss Kitchen.
“Our food is vegetarian and Indian
Inspired,” Brinda Raval of Bliss Kitchen
said. “We have a lunch buffet from 12 to 3
p.m., offer catering and take out.”
Bliss is approaching its two-year
anniversary, having opened its doors in
2014 at 94 S. Robinson Ave in Newburgh.
Even with all the spectacular food the
spirit of the evening was captured by
the musical performance of ‘A Sound of
Greater Newburgh’ (ASGN).
Comprised of Mike Pacer - Sax,
Tony Speranza - Trumpet, Vic Caruso
- Vibraphone, Rob Helsel - Guitar, Rick
McCurdy - Bass and Tom Cunane - Drums,
the instrumental melodies performed
‘A Sound of Greater Newburgh’ entertained at the event.
by this local act captured the laid back
relaxed atmosphere of the afternoon
perfectly.
Just a short walk downhill from the
tent where the main festivities were held
was a small, but nevertheless eventful,
car show - the start of whom was a local
attendee with a very rare car.
Tom Jannotti brought a 1935 Ford. In
those days unnamed, this 81-year-old
piece of automobile history featured an
original body and a whole lot of Tom.
“I found it in a garage in Newburgh as
basically a shell,” Jannotti said. “It took
me years of work to restore it, the inside
is modern and can go as fast as any other
car on the road, but the outside, as you
can see, is original.”
Representing the Newburgh Rotary
club that sponsored the event was Bob
McCurdy who took over for his dad in
spearheading the organization of the
annual festival after his passing. “My
dad always did it so it was kinda in the
family,” McCurdy said. “When he passed,
I just kind of picked it up.”
