Region to honor its war dead

Memorial Day is a national observance recognizing all who have died in service to the Nation . It began as an informal nation-wide observance 152 years ago . It will be observed this weekend in Eastern orange County .

City of Newburgh
The City ’ s observance of Memorial Day begins Friday , between 10 a . m . and 2 p . m . with the distribution of flags to graves of veterans .
The Memorial Day Parade , Saturday , May 27 , steps off from its formation on West and Third Street promptly at 10 a . m . The Parade proceeds down West Street to Broadway , then turns onto Liberty Street and continues into Washington ’ s Headquarters .
Memorial Day Services will begin at Washington ’ s Headquarters at approximately 11:45 a . m . Karen Nappi , Senior Deputy Director , Orange County Veteran Services and Gulf War Veteran will be mistress of ceremonies , to be held at Washington ’ s Headquarters immediately following the Memorial Day Parade . Guest Speaker at the ceremonies will be Christopher Eachus , County Legislator representing the 15th District . He will be speaking about the meaning of Memorial Day .
Eachus was born on October 8 , 1955 , in San Mateo , California . Besides living in California , he spent his early years growing up in Peru , finally settling with his parents , two sisters and brother on Long Island , New York . His schooling cumulated with a Master ’ s Degree from SUNY , New Paltz , after attending SUNY , Cortland for four years . He has taught high school physics , math and Earth Science for 40 years , all right here in the Hudson Valley .
He retired from Newburgh Free Academy two years ago , but maintained his relationship with the school by teaching engineering to select classes and maintaining his advisorship of the Solar Car Racing Team , now known as the Concept Vehicle Racing Team ( CVRT ). As the NFA Solar Car Racing Team advisor , he won three National Championships competing against other high schools across the nation .
Eachus is currently an Orange County Legislator , serving for the past 12 years in that position and Orange County Commander Sons of the American Legion , serving for the past five years . He is Vice-Commander of Sons of the American Legion Squadron 1796 of New Windsor . As a Sons member , he has dedicated himself to assisting veterans

and active military personnel throughout the county . He has supplied emergency housing to homeless veterans , sent tons of necessities overseas to local active military personnel , and helped renovate a home for homeless veterans here in Orange County . Chris also serves on the 18th Congressional Veterans Advisory Board , overseeing benefits and the welfare of veterans throughout the Hudson Valley . Chris volunteers on the Boy Scouts Eagle Board of Review , on the Advisory Board for the City of Newburgh Salvation Army , and is past president of the Greater Newburgh Optimist Club . He also is an active member of the Quassaick Creek Watershed Association .
Memorial Day observances in the City of Newburgh will conclude with the reading of the names of all deceased veterans since World War I at the Orange County Veterans Memorial , at the intersection of Liberty Street and Leroy Place , at 3 p . m . on Saturday , May 27 , 2017 . Members who would like to read the names of their veterans are most welcome to do so .
Town of Newburgh
The long standing traditions of Memorial Day will be solemnly observed in the Town of Newburgh on Sunday , May 28 .
Early in the morning , teams of persons under the guidance of our local American Legion post will be decorating local graves of veterans with American flags . This demonstrates our gratitude to those who sacrificed so that our nation can remain free .
At 10 a . m . a ceremony will be held at the Veterans Memorial at Newburgh Town Hall , which will involve wreath layings at the memorial . Participating will be the American Legion , the V . F . W ., the Vietnam Veterans organization , AMVETS , our local Boy Scout troops , and our ladies auxiliaries .
The annual parade will step off at 1 p . m . sharp in front of the American Legion post headquarters on Union Avenue . It will proceed south to Route 52 , then go east to Algonquin Park , and conclude at the reviewing stand on Powder Mill Road .
Leading the parade and saluting from the reviewing stand will be long time veterans activist and community leader William Wiseman , who was chosen as the Grand Marshal of the 2017 Memorial Day parade .
The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor
The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor is offering a presentation on the American Civil War origins and meaning of Memorial Day to provide a better understanding of , and appreciation for this holiday . The presentation will be held on Temple Hill in conjunction with the Memorial Day activities at the New Windsor Cantonment .
The presentation “ Memorial Day History & Traditions ” will take place at 3 p . m . on Monday , May 29 .
