4 Mid Hudson Times, Wednesday, May 16, 2018 Maloney undecided on attorney general bid By SHANTAL RILEY [email protected] U.S. Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney has declined to interview to complete the term of former New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who resigned earlier this month. The decision was made when Acting Attorney General Barbara Underwood submitted her application for the job, Maloney said. “The Assembly is fulfilling its constitutional responsibility to select someone to serve the remainder of this attorney general term,” Maloney said in a statement Monday, referring to the New York State Assembly. According to Maloney’s office, 13 candidates were vying to carry out the term as of Tuesday. “I intended to participate in the Assembly’s process out of respect for those proceedings and because I am currently considering whether to run for the office later this year,” Maloney said. “But, because Acting Attorney General Barbara Underwood has entered the Assembly’s process - and she is a tremendously qualified candidate who could serve out the remainder of this term free of any political considerations - I have decided to support her bid to fill the vacancy between now and the election.” Underwood has served as New York Solicitor General since 2007. First elected attorney general in 2010, Schneiderman resigned on May 8 following allegations of abuse by four women. In a statement, Schneiderman admitted to “role- playing and other consensual sexual activity” in intimate relationships but denied allegations of assault. “I have never engaged in nonconsensual sex, which is a line I would not cross,” he stated. Maloney represents the 18th Congressional District covering portions of the Lower Hudson Valley, including the cities of Newburgh, Middletown, Beacon and Poughkeepsie. “Come November, the people of New York will decide who will be the next attorney general, and I will decide soon whether to run for that office,” Maloney said Monday. The attorney general term is four years. I n B rief Car break-ins in Balmville Town of Newburgh Police are advising that residents lock their vehicles following a rash of car break-ins last month. Many occurred in the Balmville section of town. “In most cases, car doors were left unlocked,” said Town of Newburgh Police Chief Bruce Campbell. A total of 30 larcenies involving vehicles were reported in the Town of Newburgh since Jan. 1, Campbell said. More than a dozen occurred in Balmville, he said. Another smattering of break-ins took place in the area of Alfonzo Road and Route 17K, he said. Loose change was most often reported stolen. A wallet, phone charger and a laptop were also reported missing. No broken windows were reported, the police chief said. More break-ins may have occurred, as people tend not to report them if nothing is stolen from their vehicles, Campbell explained. “A lot of people don’t report it when they see their cars have been ransacked, but nothing is missing,” he said. “They should call in and report it,” Campbell said, as the information can offer important information to police.
