New Windsor hosts Arbor Day celebration
By SHANTAL RILEY sriley @ tcnewspapers . com
It was a rainy Arbor Day celebration in New Windsor on Friday as residents and town officials gathered at the New Windsor Town Hall complex to mark the day .
“ We decided we wanted to dedicate these trees to organizations that serve the community ,” said town Chief of Staff Colin Schmitt . About a dozen trees were planted , including eastern redbud trees , Kazan and weeping cherry trees .
The inaugural event saw five of the new trees dedicated to veterans ’ groups and first responders , including the American Legion 1796 , the Disabled American Veterans Thomas D . Peterkin Memorial Chapter # 152 , the Catholic War Veterans Post 386 , New York City Retired Firefighters of Orange , New Windsor
Police Benevolent Association and the New Windsor Volunteer Ambulance Corps .
The trees and planting materials were paid for through an Arbor Day Community Grant from the New York State Urban Forestry Council . New Windsor was the only municipality in the region to receive the grant this year , said town Parks and Recreation Director Matt Veronesi .
The dedication ceremony was followed with a horticultural presentation for Sacred Heart School students , who were gifted with Norway spruce and white spruce saplings donated by Devitt ’ s Nursery and Supply .
The town also rededicated the town Fireman ’ s Memorial that afternoon . The memorial was refurbished with donations from the Vails Gate and New Windsor fire departments .

As proposed at Stewart , the recovered fuel from garbage operation would mean a new stream of traffic at the growing airport whose own business is booming .
“ You ’ re talking 55 trucks per day ,” as proposed , said Edsall said .
That estimate is based on company figures for traffic , he said , especially at Stewart International Airport , could be a concern .
“ It would not be an issue ,” he said , “ if the truck routes were controlled .”
But preliminary plans , Edsall said , show “ truck traffic integrating with passenger traffic on International Plaza ... so that is a concern we need to look at closely .”
“ If it ’ s in the interior of the park ,” said Edsall , “ then we have less control .”
Managing that truck traffic detail will be up to
BioHiTech Global to solve with advice from the town .
Planning Board chairman chairman Gerry Argenio told the audience , “ you should keep your eyes on this because we will be having a public hearing ”. No date was mentioned .
Project lawyer Richard Golden deemed the meeting a good beginning for his clients .
“ They asked the right kinds of questions . And they took the appropriate environmental steps to get the project moving forward by getting involved with other oversight agencies .
“ So I think that ’ s progress ... these are all the issues the board should be addressing . Nothing insoluble . They raised issues and we ’ ll have to address them .”
The proposed operation would have capacity to process 130,000 tons a year of solid waste .
Oversight will include the New York state Department of Environmental Conservation .
Thursday ’ s planning board meeting was the most recent public airing of this project since BioHiTechGlobal signed a $ 1.1 million contract last year with New Windsor to get the 12-acre site for its operation at the airport .
