The March 14 events included artwork, town halls, discussions and periods of silence in memory of the shooting victims. “It was student driven,” said district Communications Strategist Cassie Sklarz. “Administrators let the students lead.” Kindness was the theme that day at Gidney Avenue Memorial School (GAMS), where students participated in a “Walk Up” against violence at school. Students were encouraged to walk up to 17 students, teachers and staff to say something kind. Service was a theme at NFA West, where students signed up to volunteer at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center and write letters of condolence to the victims’ families. NFA West students also carried out random acts of kindness. The events were held to honor the 17 students and staff who were gunned down at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where a troubled ex-student, Nikolas Cruz, 19, went on a shooting fatal spree on Feb. 14. Heritage Middle School students sat in 17 minutes of silence and spoke about positive steps to take “to set the right tone and culture in a school,” the district said. NFA North and NFA Main campuses Ebony Clark, NFA West co-principal, and social worker Carolee Hamlin sign students up for volunteer work. saw hundreds of students walk out of their classrooms to sit in silence. About 25 students walked out at NFA Main and stood on the front steps of the building. None of the students were disciplined for walking out of their classes. The students were joined by countless students from around the country that day. “We believe that young people of all ages in Newburgh deserve invitations to be civically engaged and to peacefully advocate for themselves and their communities,” district Superintendent of Schools Roberto Padilla said in a March 9 posting to the district website. Earlier this month, the district held a forum on school safety. At the meeting, Padilla said the district has plans to upgrade school building secu
