3 Mid Hudson Times, Wednesday, March 13, 2019 Awesome Foundation in search of a worthwhile project By KATELYN CORDERO [email protected] The Newburgh Awesome Foundation is supporting residents of Newburgh with a generous board of trustees each donating $100 a month for a $1,000 grant to a project in the City of Newburgh. The board is made up of 12 trustees, Naomi Hersson- Ringskog, Brad Bloomer, Elizabeth Capello, Annie Chen, Sandra Davila, Jennifer Ifil-Ryan, Kaya Kuehl, Aaron Lown, Liz Mcenaney, Rebeca Ramirez, Tashae Smith, and Gena Wirth. The group is a chapter of The Awesome Foundation an international organization made up of chapters around the world that focus on generating micro-grants on a no strings attached basis. “It gives us the opportunity to be on the other side to get what we want from the process for our grantees,” said Ramirez. “The trustees all have different backgrounds and different roles in Newburgh. The application is very easy to apply and it gives people the chance for those who haven’t done this before to reach out to us and ask questions.” The application is a simple six question survey. The trustees look for applicants that can lay out a vision that will benefit Newburgh. If an applicant is not accepted the first time they apply they can reach out to the trustees for feedback and submit as many times necessary. Some previous projects funded through the Awesome Foundation include the McLymore Scholarship, Newburgh’s International Day of Happiness, Newburgh’s Barbershop’s, Field Trip, Weave and Writes, Teaching Kids about Native Americans, Newburgh Elementary School Gardens, A Culinary Workshop, and the Together We Can Timebank. The foundation launched at the Newburgh Illuminated Festival in 2018, providing funding for projects every month since June. This month the chapter is using a different approach to choose the grantee for the Awesome Foundation. A pitch party will be used to allow members of the public to pick who will win the grant for the month of March. Applicants will give three minute pitches to an audience, at the end of the night a winner will be chosen. The party will be held on March 17 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Thornwillow Institute on 7 S Lander Street. How are you going to make it better?” According to Palmer the first project done in the City of Newburgh was a larger undertaking than the company was prepared for. They completed 24,000 linear feet and 400 service lines. They plan to cut down significantly on the amount of work they plan to do in one shot and start the project this month. “That was a big undertaking, this year we have planned a 10,000 linear ft project with approximately 35 services,” said Palmer. “We would like to start the project as early as possible and throw as much resources at it as we can to shorten the amount of time that we are under construction. That would allow us to pave immediately following. We’ve also taken the paving portion out of the course, we are using a private contractor from BTM out of Poughkeepsie to do the milling and paving in many of those areas up to a lane width.” The next replacement is expected to take 18 weeks to complete. Construction will take place on the following streets: First St, between Robinson and Liberty St and Liberty St and Montgomery St; Carter St between Robinson Ave and Carpenter Ave; Third St, between Robinson Ave and Carpenter Ave and between Lander St and Grand St; Carpenter Ave, between Broadway and Third St; City Terrace, between Third St and Carter St and between First St and Broadway; Van Ness St, between Carpenter Ave and City Terrace; Dubois St, between First St and Third St; Chambers St, between First St and Third St; Liberty St, between Broadway and Farrington St; and Block has Montgomery St, answers. between First St and Second St. If you have any questions or concerns Tax reform impacts virtually all returns this year.
