Church service focuses on workplace discrimination

Davis was referring to a meeting last
week when he and Murphy met, along
with her lawyer Michael Sussman, with
city Comptroller Michael Ciaravino,
city Councilwoman Cindy Holmes, city
Corporation Counsel Michelle Kelson, a
labor attorney and two other local pastors.
City Comptroller John Aber was
expected to attend but never showed, said
Davis. “I feel like the meeting was in vain
simply because the comptroller was not
there,” said Davis, whose wife Sabrina
Davis was also terminated from her clerical position in the city water department
last year. “(Murphy) just wanted to plead
her case. She wanted some clarity.”
Mayor Judy Kennedy explained
Monday that an outside investigation was
being conducted to examine Murphy’s
allegation that she was wrongfully terminated.
“It focuses on the competency of the
employee and what she did, the behavior of herself, her supervisor and those
involved,” Kennedy said. “We’re asking
the state Comptroller’s Office to come in
and do an audit for the last two years to
find out how this impacts the financial
records.”
There have been “no allegations of
missing funds,” the mayor added. “We
can’t have mistakes in the financial
office,” Kennedy said.
Kennedy said it was her opinion that
council members should not have anything to with hiring and firing of employees, as that is the job of the city manager.
