The Newburgh Pottery to open in July

By LAUREN BERG

The newest addition to Newburgh ’ s burgeoning art scene , this summer the city of Newburgh will be getting its very own ceramics studio . David Moldover and fiancé Jenny Mittica are planning on opening their studio , the Newburgh Pottery , at Atlas Studios this July .

Moldover and Mittica are both ceramics artists who have been involved in the New York City ceramics scene for nearly 10 years . They have experience teaching and managing ceramics studios like La Mano Pottery , as well as designing and producing products for local businesses and clients . Ever since the pair met in a pottery studio five years ago they have had a dream of opening a studio together . Now , Moldover and Mittica are taking the next step and making the move up from their home in Brooklyn to Newburgh . For them , Newburgh is the perfect location for their studio .
“ When we pictured the dream area , I always said I like cities , but I love the country . Wouldn ’ t it be crazy if we found a city in the mountains ? We saw Newburgh and said ‘ This is exactly what we are looking for ,’” explained Moldover .
The Newburgh Pottery ’ s studio space will be located in Atlas Studios , which is also home to Atlas Industries and several other workshops and studios for local artists and creative entrepreneurs . Moldover explained that it was in fact Joseph Fratesi of Atlas Studios that brought them to Newburgh in the first place , and expressed a desire to have a ceramics studio in his building .
“ As soon as I saw the space and saw Newburgh , we were set , it was a done deal ,” said Moldover . “ The Atlas building is right down by Washington Headquarters . It ’ s the coolest area .”
For Moldover and Mittica , one of the biggest attractions of a ceramics studio is the way it creates a diverse and friendly community . In New York City , Moldover has witnessed studios filled with people from all different walks of life - lawyers , actors , musicians , college students , moms , dads - all socializing over a shared interest in pottery . It ’ s that sort of community that the pair want to foster in their Newburgh studio .
“ These communities have their own thing going for them . They are about so much more than cups and mugs ,” said Moldover . He hopes their studio can be a “ place where everyone is welcome , where people can be , and learn and have fun .”

David Moldover and fiancé Jenny Mittica are planning on opening their studio , The Newburgh Pottery , at Atlas Studios this July .
The Newburgh Pottery plans on offering 8-week-long courses , ranging from beginner to advanced levels . Each class will hold about 10 students , meet up once a week , and have the opportunity for practice during the studio ’ s open practice times six days a week . The Newburgh Pottery also hopes to feature introductory and advanced workshops , as well as guest artist lectures and workshops . Moldover expressed a desire to network and collaborate with other local artists , potentially featuring unique kiln firing methods and even an outdoor primitive pottery expedition , where participants hike to an area where they can dig up their own clay . The couple sees many areas for growth in the studio ’ s future .
“ Ceramics has infinite potential for these materials , tons of processes . I want to offer as much as possible ,” explained Moldover . “[ We are ] excited about this craft and what it can do for the community , and bring people together .”
The Newburgh Pottery will also be offering custom products for Newburgh ’ s many new and established local businesses .
