A fire fighter was injured in a blaze on
Carpenter Avenue last Wednesday. The
cause of the fire remains unknown. “It
is still under investigation by the City of
Newburgh Fire Department,” said city
Assistant Fire Chief Bill Horton.
City fire fighters first received a call for
the fire at 10:40 a.m. on May 30. According
to Horton, they arrived to find several
storage structures ablaze on Carpenter
Avenue near Van Ness Street. The Orange
County Office of Real Property identifies
the property at 23-29 Carpenter Avenue as
a lumber yard owned by Castro & Son’s
Acquisitions LLC.
“The fire was exacerbated by high winds
and low water pressure,” said Horton.
The buildings were all non-residential, he
said, but one apartment building exposed
to heat was evacuated nearby on Concord
Street.
One city fire fighter suffered second-
degree burns to his face. He was taken
to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital and later
released.
West Point Fire Department, Stewart
Air National Guard Fire Department,
Castle Point VA Fire Department,
Goodwill Fire Department, Cronomer
Valley Fire Department, Orange Lake
Fire Department and Vails Gate Fire
Department provided mutual aid at the
scene.
The fire is believed to have started in a
large shed filled with what looked like
wooden cabinets being stored.
