The town of Newburgh held an unusual
workshop meeting this past May 29.
While all workshop meetings are open
to the public, they generally do not allow
time for public comments. However, as
many locals in attendance came to voice
their opinion on the 98-acre request for
agricultural zone near Chadwick Lake,
town supervisor Gil Piaquadio made a
few exceptions.
Throughout the meeting Piaquadio
and various board members encouraged
residents to voice their concerns at the
June 7 public hearing at the Orange
County Legislature meeting in Goshen.
The town board vote on May 29 was to
determine whether to recommend if the
property is capable of having a farm. “All
we are going to do as a board tonight is
send a recommendation to the county,”

said Piaquadio. “The county is in charge
to make sure the soils can be maintained
for farming. It has nothing to do with the
use of anything.” He clarified that only
when the owners apply for an exemption
on property taxes, which requires at least
two years of profits of $10,000 or more
from farming the land, can the town
then consider the use of the land in their
decision-making.

County Legislator Kevindaryan Lujan
has announced he will run for the seat left
vacant by the passing of Assemblyman
Frank Skartados. The 104th Assembly
District covers portions of Dutchess,
Ulster and Orange counties.
“I see this as a continuation of

Lujan
said
shortly
after
announcing
his
decision
last
week.
“Frank
was
always great at
making sure his
communities
were
getting
their fair share
of funds. I want Kevindaryan Lujan
to make sure I
continue that legacy.”
Lujan, 31, never served in public office
when he was elected to represent District
4 in the Orange County Legislature last
year. Now in his sixth month on the job,
Lujan said he was reluctant to run for the
assembly seat.
