Bees and native plants will be the focus of a free set of workshops at Downing Park Urban Farm on Saturday . Local landscape designer Bryan Quinn will be among the experts leading the “ Summer ’ s Buzzing : Bees and Native Plants ” event .

“ Fixing Carbon and Making Habitat with Native Plants ” will cover topics including composting and how plants influence the global carbon cycle .
For example , said farm Manager Marcel Barrick , perennials like wildflowers are much more ecologically sustainable than turf grass . “ Turf has to be maintained by mowing ,” he said . “ People use chemicals to maintain the quality of their lawns . A lot of those chemicals are toxic and have a negative effect on waters downstream . Wildflowers aren ’ t heavy users of irrigation , fertilizers or pesticides .”
The workshop will appeal to people interested in taking their gardening to “ another level of sustainability ,” said Barrick .
Quinn is founder of the Beacon-based landscape design firm One Nature . Using extensive first-hand experience , Quinn will provide concrete examples of “ specific plants and restoration techniques suitable for the Hudson Valley ,” the farm website states .
The beekeeping class will focus on pollinators and why they are important to our food system , said Barrick . The workshop will focus not only on honey bees but other pollinators , including native bumble bees , hover flies , beetles and moths . This class is for beginners as well as seasoned beekeepers .
Dedicated to creating teachable examples of urban agriculture and ecology , the urban farm is supported by city Community Development Block Grant funding . The farm is a joint project of the City of Newburgh , the Newburgh Community Land Bank and the Downing Park Planning Committee .
Field Day at Downing Park Urban Farm takes place from 10 a . m . to noon on Saturday , July 30 at the Downing Park Urban Farm , located at Carpenter Avenue and Elm Street . For more information , visit Downingparkurbanfarm . org .
