Agudas Israel welcomes 2 interim rabbis
By SHANTAL RILEY

Congregation Agudas Israel welcomes
two interim rabbis this summer. Rabbi
Martin Edelman and Rabbi Margie Cella
will begin serving the congregation in
August. It is the first time the congregation
will have a female rabbi.
“A Jew is commanded to live a life that
is sacred and holy,” said Rabbi Edelman,
in interpersonal relationships as well as
in their relationship with God. “Everyone
has a different sense of God, each one of
us in a different way. That is a constant
theme in my teaching.”
Edelman and Cella are stepping
in to fill a vacancy left by Rabbi Phil
Weintraub, who left Agudas Israel at the
beginning of the month. They will serve
for a year until a full-time rabbi is hired.
The two are very different; one is a
student and the other has more than 40

“This is my second career,” said Cella,
who retired in 2014 after a 30-year career
as a math teacher on Long Island where
she taught at Southampton High School
for 25 years.
“While I’m there, I’d like to introduce
new programs, some new classes,” said
Cella, though which she does not yet
know. “We’ll talk to the congregation to
see what they would like to study.”
“I would like to help the congregation
two Shabbats per month.
Cella will serve during the
other two. Edelman will
also be at the synagogue
for the holidays of Rosh
Hashanah
and
Yom
Kippur. Cella will be there
for the festival of Sukkot.
