3 Mid Hudson Times, Wednesday, July 20, 2016 Trail opens along Newburgh waterfront BY SHANTAL RILEY [email protected] The City of Newburgh has completed a mile-long, viewfilled trail connecting the People’s Waterfront parcel with Ward Brothers Memorial Park along the Hudson River. The Hudson River Waterfront Trail is open seven days a week from sunrise until sunset. Access is free to the public. A couple walked hand-in-hand along the riverfront on Tuesday. Pleasure boats glided slowly by as they strolled. “We saw a rabbit and rowers practicing in the water,” said city resident Tim Riss. The trail entrances are located at the city’s boat launch at the bottom of Washington Street and at Ward Brothers Park. The trail completely surrounds the People’s Waterfront property and continues along the river to Ward Brother’s Park and the Newburgh Rowing Club. Almost $35,000 in city Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds were spent on paving, gates, fencing and landscape improvements, among other trail features, said city Director of Planning and Development Deirdre The Hudson River Waterfront Trail is now open to the public. Glenn. “We’re hoping to have events and concerts there,” said Glenn, referring to the newly opened waterfront space. Opened to the public in March, the undeveloped park remains wild in most areas. It is located on the former site of Consolidated Iron and Metal. Consolidated Iron operated a scrap and car junkyard there from the mid-50s until 1999, depositing heavy metals, volatile organic compounds and PCBs in the water and soil. Placed on the Environmental Protection Agency’s National Priority List of superfund sites, it was de-listed by the EPA in 2014. The right lane of Interstate 84 was closed due to an upcoming construction zone. A 5th vehicle, (2010 Dodge Truck), was slowing down approaching the stopped traffic when it was struck from behind by a 6th vehicle (2004 Freightliner Tractor Trailer). The force of the tractor trailer striking the Dodge truck caused the Dodge, which is occupied by two adults, to flip over approximately four times coming to rest in the grassy center median. Occupants of the Mitsibushi and Sprinter Van were trapped inside the vehicles and had to be extracted out. The passenger of the Sprinter Van, identified as Christopher Marks, age 43, of Chester, was pronounced dead at the scene by Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office. Those injured were taken to area hospitals (Orange Regional Medical Center, St Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh and Cornwall Campuses) including several that were flown to Westchester County by Medivac.
