The City of Newburgh has completed a mile-long, viewfilled trail connecting the People’s Waterfront parcel with
Ward Brothers Memorial Park along the Hudson River.
The Hudson River Waterfront Trail is open seven days
a week from sunrise until sunset. Access is free to the
public.
A couple walked hand-in-hand along the riverfront on
Tuesday. Pleasure boats glided slowly by as they strolled.
“We saw a rabbit and rowers practicing in the water,”
said city resident Tim Riss.
The trail entrances are located at the city’s boat
launch at the bottom of Washington Street and at Ward
Brothers Park. The trail completely surrounds the
People’s Waterfront property and continues along the
river to Ward Brother’s Park and the Newburgh Rowing
Club.
Almost $35,000 in city Community Development Block
Grant (CDBG) funds were spent on paving, gates, fencing
and landscape improvements, among other trail features,
said city Director of Planning and Development Deirdre

Glenn. “We’re hoping to have events and concerts there,”
said Glenn, referring to the newly opened waterfront
space.
Opened to the public in March, the undeveloped park
remains wild in most areas. It is located on the former
site of Consolidated Iron and Metal.
Consolidated Iron operated a scrap and car junkyard
there from the mid-50s until 1999, depositing heavy
metals, volatile organic compounds and PCBs in the
water and soil. Placed on the Environmental Protection
Agency’s National Priority List of superfund sites, it was
de-listed by the EPA in 2014.

State Police are investigating a fatality
involving six motor vehicles on Interstate
84 near Maybrook.
On July 13, at approximately 12:20 p.m.,
four vehicles (2016 White Hyundai Sante
Fe, 2016 Freightliner Tractor Trailer, 2014
Mitsibushi Outlander, 2003 Sprinter Van
towing a small utility trailer) were stopped
in traffic in the left lane of Interstate 84
westbound near mile marker 28.
The right lane of Interstate 84 was
closed due to an upcoming construction
zone. A 5th vehicle, (2010 Dodge Truck),
was slowing down approaching the
stopped traffic when it was struck from
behind by a 6th vehicle (2004 Freightliner
Tractor Trailer). The force of the tractor
trailer striking the Dodge truck caused
the Dodge, which is occupied by two
adults, to flip over approximately four
times coming to rest in the grassy center
median. The Tractor Trailer continues

into the rear of the Sprinter Van, which is
occupied by two adults, crunching the van
into the Mitsibushi, which was occupied
by two adults and a nine-year-old male.
The impact caused the Mitsibushi to
crumble underneath the 2016 Freightliner,
driven by sole occupant, and push the
Freightliner into the 2016 Hyundai Sante
Fe, which was occupied by two adults.
Occupants of the Mitsibushi and
Sprinter Van were trapped inside the
vehicles and had to be extracted out. The
passenger of the Sprinter Van, identified
as Christopher Marks, age 43, of Chester,
was pronounced dead at the scene by
Orange County Medical Examiner’s
Office. Those injured were taken to
area hospitals (Orange Regional Medical
Center, St Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in
Newburgh and Cornwall Campuses)
including several that were flown to
Westchester County by Medivac.
Investigation is continuing with
charges pending.
