Voices of reason

Continued from page 1
Brunson spoke before the Newburgh City Council , which heard heated comments regarding police-community relations Monday . After observing a moment of silence in honor of the victims , city officials called for calmness in the wake of the shootings .
“ The violence , the insanity , the stupidity , it is beyond me ,” said Newburgh Mayor Judy Kennedy . “ But here … in the City of Newburgh , we don ’ t have to follow that model .”
Outside the building , a small group of people held hands in a circle , praying loudly for peace in the City of Newburgh and communities recently visited by violence .
Dallas officials reported 25-yearold Micah Johnson , who served a tour in Afghanistan in 2013 and 2014 , shot and killed five police officers at a Black Lives Matter rally on July 7 . During negotiations , Johnson told police he was upset by recent police shootings and wanted to kill white people and white police officers . Johnson died with the detonation of a robotic bomb .
The demonstration was held in protest of last week ’ s police shootings Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge , Louisiana and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights , Minnesota . Castile ’ s fiancée captured part of the shooting incident on video , igniting nationwide protests .
In Newburgh Monday , Brunson claimed police had harassed her family . “ It ’ s sad we have to live like this ,” she said . Omari Shakur , whose son was shot and killed by city police in 2006 , became visibly upset when speaking . “ Police have been killing us lately ,” he said .
Shakur spoke about an altercation between police and a 30-year-old City of Newburgh man last Wednesday . “ Our police are out of control ,” Shakur shouted , moments before storming out of the council meeting .
City police issued a press release about the incident , stating police responded to a “ report of a man in the roadway jumping on vehicles ,” and city resident Charles Patterson “ appeared to be under the influence of an intoxicant , became combative and charged at an officer , grabbing hold of him .”
A Taser was used to subdue Patterson , city police said . Body cameras later provided video shared with Patterson ’ s family .
Rasheda Worth , a member of the city ’ s Police Community Relations and Review
A group of faithful pray for peace outside Newburgh City Hall following shootings in Dallas , Minnesota and Louisiana .
Board and director of cultural affairs at Life Stations Centers of Excellence , said she and other board members met with police and Patterson ’ s family . “ There are no lawsuits being brought against city ,” Worth said . “ On behalf of the family , we are satisfied with the information that was provided .”
“ People are not fact-checking ,” said Councilwoman Karen Mejia , who watched the video .
Mejia said , by the end of the day on July 6 – the same day Castile was shot in Minnesota - she was hearing various stories from people in her ward . “ The word on the street was that the police had killed someone ,” she said . “ So , I reached out to Chief Cameron .”
By then , Mejia said , City of Newburgh Police Chief Dan Cameron had already scheduled a meeting with Patterson ’ s family .
Both the city and police department have made “ great strides ” in the last two years , Mejia said , including increased community policing and video surveillance , the formation of a policecommunity relations board and use of police body cameras .
Body camera video was able to show precisely what happened in the Patterson incident , Mejia said Tuesday . “ It demonstrated the incident as it took place from multiple perspectives ,” Mejia said . “ Each of the uniformed officers at the scene had their own camera angle . If
you were not there , it could potentially look very different .”
The next Police Community Relations Board meeting will be held at 7 p . m . on Wednesday , July 27 at the City of Newburgh Activity Center , located at 401 Washington Street .
Rasheda Worth , a Police-Community Relations and Review Board member , warns against “ reacting without the facts ” following an altercation between a 30-yearold City of Newburgh man and police last Wednesday .
