The City of Newburgh Fire Department ’ s new fireboat , the Andrew J . Downing .

Named after Newburgh native and famous landscape architect Andrew J . Downing , the state-of-the-art fire and rescue boat was dedicated at a ceremony held at the Newburgh boat launch in late June . The boat was purchased for $ 345,000 through a Port Security Grant from the U . S . Department of Homeland Security . The city ’ s portion of the cost was $ 80,000 , paid for with donations and the sale of the old fireboat .

According to the City of Newburgh , the city fire department is charged with protecting 3.5 square miles of land and two miles of waterfront “ heavily travelled all year with cargo ships and barge traffic , and during the warmer months with fishing , pleasure and tour boats ,” ferries and rowing-club boats .

The 250-horsepower , twin-engine vessel will be shared with the City of Newburgh Police Department and provide mutual aid for nearby emergency responders .

Barely a week old , the boat had already extinguished a brush fire , said LoCicero . “ We saw smoke ,” the lieutenant said , near the train tracks at the edge of the water in Marlborough . “ We had the fire out before the fire department got there .”

The boat is outfitted with water and fire-foam nozzles and hoses capable of fighting fires on-shore . The boat is equipped to conduct diving operations , and search and rescue missions . The vessel can also supply land-based pumpers with water .

LoCicero lowered a door at the tip of the bow . “ That will serve as a ladder to anyone in the water ,” he said . “ If they can ’ t raise themselves , all they ’ ll need to do is hang on and be pulled up .”

Pickens , who drove the boat with two steady hands . On shore , train cars passed one by one near the Global Terminal . “ If a tanker caught on fire , we could get to it ,” said Ahlers .

The boat will be available for service 24 hours a day , seven days a week , Ahlers said . In the winter , the boat will function in up to five feet of ice , he said . By next year , the entire department will be trained to operate the fire boat , LoCicero said .
