“ In every era , God has chosen men and women to serve the needs of his people . Such a servant was Martin Luther King Jr ., whose birth we celebrate .”

Evangeline Edwards , of the Black History Committee of the Hudson Valley , read a litany at New Hope Baptist Church for the committee ’ s annual Rev . Dr . Martin Luther King Jr . memorial service on Monday .

“ May his struggle for social transformation continue in this generation ,” said Edwards . “ May all people come to believe that with perseverance , ‘ We Shall Overcome .’”
The topic quickly turned to the upcoming inauguration of Donald Trump . “ As I am sure you are aware , we have a newly-elected president ,” said Black History Committee Vice President Rev . Terry Dorsey . “ But , God is still in control .”
Dorsey urged black people to lean on one another for support during the challenging times that lay ahead . “ We , as a people , ( clung ) to each other for survival ,” he told those gathered . “ We have come a long way .”
The reverend encouraged the community to continue to reflect on King ’ s teachings , including his message of non-violence . “ Let the dream come alive in us ,” Dorsey said .
New Hope Baptist Church Pastor Rev . Erik Maurice Pogue said he was “ amazed ” the country is now having to revisit some of the very same issues people struggled against during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s . Indeed , 2016 saw several racially-charged

testing revealed PFOS contaminated the City of Newburgh water supply at Washington Lake via Silver Stream . Tests have since found the chemical in residential wells .
The source of the contamination has been traced back to the Stewart International Airport , where PFOScontaining fire foam was used at the Stewart Air National Guard Base .
The Beaver Dam Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District covers almost 800 homes , including approximately 650 that use private groundwater wells for drinking water . The remaining 150 homes

tragedies , including the fatal shootings of three police officers in Baton Rouge , Louisiana , in July . The shooter , Gavin Eugene Long , had advocated violence against police as a response to ongoing police shootings of unarmed black men and women . The shooting deaths were replayed over and over on social media .
“ Walk together children and don ’ t get weary ,’” Pogue said , quoting from an old spiritual . “ We ’ ve got to work together … No matter how hard the
get drinking water from the Beaver Dam Lake Water Corporation Public Water Supply , which , the DEC states , also uses groundwater wells .
The agency reports that “ PFOA and PFOS were not detected in samples collected from the Beaver Dam Lake Water Corporation ’ s public supply wells .” And , the agency points out , “ Beaver Dam Lake surface water is not used as a source of drinking water .”
Most of the private wells in the Beaver Dam Lake area tested by the state Department of Health were found to be “ non-detect for PFOA and PFOS ,” the DEC explains , and when the chemicals were detected , they were found at levels “ well struggle may be , we can join together and make it happen .”
The event included youth workshops focused on King ’ s teachings , given to children from preschool age to grade 12 . The theme of the gathering this year was , “ Back to the Basics … Physically and Spiritually .”
Rev . Nelson McAllister covered the theme in terms of how it applies to the community . “ We need a new attitude ,” he said . “ The big difference is whether your attitude is positive or negative .”
An attitude involves both action and thoughts , McAllister said . “ What you feel on the inside is going to come out on the outside ,” the reverend said . “ Not a single part of your life is not affected by your attitude .”
McAllister recounted a trip he made to South Africa in 2010 . “ There were people walking to church in the mud ,” he said , with no shoes and happy to do it .
He warned against falling too much under the influence of American pop culture and “ Hollywood wives and husbands ” television shows sending the wrong message . “ We look at that junk and it gives us a negative attitude ,” McAllister said . “ You need to turn ( the television ) off .”
Newburgh City Councilwoman Cindy Holmes spoke about getting back to the basics at home . “ My house is always blessed when I pray morning , noon and night ,” she said . “ The more I pray , the more I stay around people of God , I am blessed .”
The entire church congregation sang “ Lift Every Voice and Sing ,” and Mary McLymore sang beautifully with a powerful performance of “ I Want Jesus to Walk with Me .”
