3 Mid Hudson Times, Wednesday, January 13, 2016 Warming center needs $ donations, volunteers By SHANTAL RILEY [email protected] The Newburgh Community Warming Station is seeking help in the form of volunteers and financial support. Opened in December, the warming center provides shelter to the homeless in the City of Newburgh during the cold-weather months until March. Housed at the First United Methodist Church on Liberty Street, the warming center is open from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. “We had some leftover funding from a church-mission grant, but it has been depleted,” said church Pastor Derrick Watson, who runs the facility with a skeleton crew. Since the cold weather arrived, the warming center sees an average of 25 to 30 people each night. “It’s getting crowded,” Watson said. The shelter portion of the facility provides overnight shelter to more than a dozen people on a nightly basis, the pastor said. It is funded separately by a grant through HONORehg of Middletown. In addition to financial support, volunteers are needed to man the center and Rev. Derrick Watson is looking for money and volunteers to keep the warming shelter open. greet clients. “I prefer they have experience working with the homeless population, but if they have a passion or a heart, they are welcome,” said Watson. Also welcome are donations of canned soups, individual packages of instant oatmeal, coffee and creamer. When asked if the warming cen- ter might close if funds are not found, Watson said no way. “My heart will not allow me to shut it down,” he said. “If I need to use shoe strings, bubble gum and rubber bands to hold it together, we will stay open.” Tax-deductible financial donations may be sent by check or money order and made out to First United Methodist Church, 245 Liberty St., Newburgh, NY 12550 – write “warming center” in the memo area.
