Regina Angelo honored after 44 years

Regina Angelo was honored this month after serving for 44 years on the Newburgh City Council . Surrounded by friends , colleagues and family , Angelo was showered with thanks , given certificates , read proclamations and bestowed with the honorary title “ Miss Newburgh .”
“ I ’ m overwhelmed ,” Angelo said , speaking at a ceremony held at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center on Sunday .
Angelo , known for organizing events such as the International Waterfront Festival , the city Memorial Day Parade , the annual July 4th celebration and the annual Christmas-Tree lighting , was described by colleagues as a true public servant . “ Regina , you ’ re unbelievable ,” said the event ’ s master of ceremonies Mark Gamma . “ You ’ re like the Energizer Bunny .”
Though retiring from the council , Angelo will continue much of her work as the city ’ s special events coordinator . “ I would be glad to do it ,” Angelo said at the ceremony . “ But , I was thinking I might want to go on a cruise first .”
A legacy of service
Angelo was born in New Windsor in 1933 . “ I was born during the Depression ,” Angelo said in an interview with Mid Hudson Times this month . “ My father worked for the WPA , building the Storm King Highway ,” Angelo said , speaking about the Depression-Era Works Progress

Angelo attended New Windsor School , then North Junior High School and Newburgh Free Academy . “ I started working at the library when I was 18 , shelving books as a page ,” she said . “ I was making 68 cents an hour .” Sixty-six years later , Angelo still works at the Newburgh Free Library . “ The reason the library is still downtown is probably Regina ,” said the library ’ s Director Chuck Thomas , referring to a 5-to-4 vote of the city council in the 1970 ’ s to keep the library downtown .
Angelo joined the city ’ s Democratic Committee in the 1950s . “ I worked hard for the committee ,” she said . Angelo recalled the time when John F . Kennedy came to the City of Newburgh . “ He came to our headquarters , opposite the Broadway
School ,” she said . “ I was fascinated by him .”
When then-committee Chairman Bill Ryan came to her house to discuss recruiting people to run for city council , “ My husband said , ‘ Here ’ s your candidate , right here ,” Angelo remembered . She won her council seat by about 3,200 votes . “ I took office in 1972 ,” Angelo said .
She busied herself with the beautification of the city , planting flowers at various parks and public sites . She planted trees at the waterfront , along Liberty Street , in front of Newburgh City Hall and many other sites .
Roxy Royal recalled Angelo lugging “ buckets of water ” down the street to water the flowers . “ Thank you flower lady ,” said Lillie Bryant Howard , who praised Angelo for “ striving to bring
