Design Firm set up shop in Newburgh
BY KATELYN CORDERO
[email protected]
J
essica Lynn Williams spent her
childhood surrounded by sawdust
and construction, as she watched
her father work on different projects as
a general contractor. It was no surprise
that she would end up creating her own
interior design firm.
The name of her company is a tribute
to her family, with her mother’s maiden
name.
“Having a shop was a fun thing that
I always wanted to do,” said Williams.
“Having a name that expands as I grow.
Henley is my mom’s maiden name, so it’s
all wrapped up in family. And that what I
want my design company to reflect, our
heritage. It is to honor my grandmother
and my mother’s family.”
Hendley & Co. has its roots in
Brooklyn, but will open up its very first
shop in Newburgh on the corner of Ann
St and Liberty. The firm is homegrown by
Williams, within five years she has grown
the business to what it is today.
“The mission is to share our design
vision,” said Williams. “We have a
specific approach to interior design that
we hope when people come here they can
understand and appreciate what we do.”
Each year she tries to grow and expand
the firm in different ways. This year
her goal was to expand into the retail
industry. The shop is a mixture of pieces
she has collected through her years of
traveling, moving around, trade pieces
and local artists. The most sentimental
pieces sold are those created by her father
Jessica Lynn Williams outside her design shop at the corner of Ann and Liberty Streets
in his workshop. She looks to sell local
pieces from artists who live off their art.
The very first piece sold in her soft
opening was a ladder created by her
father, one of the biggest supporters to
her business.
“My dad has had a huge influence in
my love for construction,” said Williams.
“We include a lot of pieces that he made
from his shop.”
A lot of the pieces that Williams sells
can be custom made, and dressed up
however the customer wishes. They also
offer custom gift baskets with different
home items, and gift cards to hire an
interior designer.
Williams plans to use the shop not only
for retail, but to meet with clients for
consultations and to hold workshops and
community events to teach people about
interior design and the construction
industry.
The official grand opening of Henley
and Co. will take place on January 26.

principals.
“We have been celebrating Kwanzaa
for over 20 years,” said. Sadie Tallie,
president of the Black History Committee.
“Kwanzaa is something that exhibits the
culture of the black community. It talks
about about life as we see it and what
we can do to enhance our community.
Kwanzaa is much more than seeing what
you are going to receive it’s about what
you can give.”
The Black History Committee holds
community events and celebrations all
year. This year the committee’s theme
is “our beloved community...going
forward”. The theme has been kicked off
with Kwanzaa and will be highlighted
