Valentine’s tradition continues at Broadway & Robinson By KATELYN CORDERO [email protected] On the corner of South Robinson Ave and Broadway, every year for the past 28 years you will find the owners of Miriam’s Boutique selling handmade baskets on Valentine’s Day. Miriam Varga has been selling her baskets on Broadway long before Target, Walmart or any other commercial businesses showed up in Newburgh. With the help of her family, they begin making hundreds of baskets starting in January to have enough for the big day. “We were here long before anyone else got here,” said Varga. “You can’t find baskets handmade the way we do them anywhere else. Each basket is unique, none of them have the same thing.” Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day sales were the start to Miriam’s Boutique. Vargas started selling baskets and flowers until she had the means to open up her store on Broadway. “At that time we were one of the only latino businesses on Broadway,” said Vargas. “We started selling flowers and our baskets on the street until we were able to open a place of our own.” Miriam’s boutique on 313 Broadway is a one stop shop for party planning. Vargas covers everything from the flower arrangements down to the dresses. The Washington Project Newburgh Free Academy students performed four plays last weekend during the annual Pesident’s Day Weekend celebration at Washington’s Headquarters. The first (shown) told the story of the creation of the badge of Military Merit, which later became known as the Purple Heart Medal. It was first awarded by Washington while his Army was encamped in the Hudson Valley. Miriam Vargas and her mother nearly sold out by Valentine’s Day evening in front of her store.
