Dutch Reformed Church-City Club rehab forum is Feb. 21
Potential developers of three City
of Newburgh properties, including the
historic Dutch Reformed Church, will
present their plan at a public forum at 6
p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 21. The meeting
will be held at the City of Newburgh
Activity Center. Free food and childcare
will be provided at the event.
A project proposed last year by
Alembic Community Development
and Hester Street Collaborative would
bring rehabilitation of the church,
redevelopment of the former City Club
property on Grand Street and housing
construction on 1.8 acres on Montgomery
Street. In January, the Newburgh City
Council voted to allow the city to accept
donations to rehabilitate the ailing church
building.
Residents opposing the project contend
the Montgomery Street property is highly
valuable, with panoramic river views,
and capable of generating significant
tax revenue. The developer has proposed
a mix of market-rate and affordable
housing at the Montgomery Street site.
Approximately 100 housing units are
slated for construction.
The City of Newburgh Activity Center
is located at 401 Washington Street.
