City of Newburgh signs agreement to remedy sewer woes

“This plan is the culmination of several years of work
by the city and will ultimately benefit the city through
economic development, increased sewer collection capacity and overall improvements to water quality within the
Hudson River and the Quassaick Creek,” Newburgh City
Manager Michael Ciaravino said at a city council meeting
Monday.
Under the agreement, the city will spend an estimated
$39 million over 15 years to improve local water quality
and prevent discharges of storm water and untreated
sewage during heavy rain.
The consent order lays out a schedule calling for five
phases of work ending in December 2030. Projects include
the separation of sewers along Water, North and Liberty
streets, and the replacement of storm drains along Third
Street and at Downing Pond.
