The City of Newburgh is planning
to build a small park on city property
along the Hudson River, just north of
Blu Pointe restaurant.
“The project has no negative effects
on the environment,” City Manager
Michael Ciaravino said shortly after the
council issued a negative declaration
allowing the plan to move forward at a
Newburgh City Council meeting earlier
this month.
The park will be situated on 1.6 acres
of land at South and Front streets on the
riverfront. The park is currently in the
design phase. A final design is expected
in the spring.
The project site presented a picturesque winter view one recent morning
as chunky ice flows lumbered along
the river, creeping slowly toward the
Newburgh-Beacon Bridge.
“Development of this park will allow
a space for public interaction with the
Hudson River, ultimately allowing
increased access and use of the river,”
explained city Engineer Jason Morris
by email this week.

The park design includes trees,
benches and a floating, seasonal dock
for car-top boats, kayaks and canoes.
Temporary standing will be allowed for
vehicles loading and unloading small
boats at the park loading dock.
The project’s survey and design work
was paid for by a $50,000 grant from the
New York State Department of State.
The city will seek additional grant funding to pay for construction of the park,
said Morris.
Engineers Greenman-Pedersen Inc.
are expected to complete the park design
sometime this spring.
