Blue Christmas in Vails Gate
The last of Ann’s Hallmark stores closing its doors

T
he last remaining Ann’s Hallmark
in Vails Gate, which has been in the
same location for 50 years, has lost
its lease and will be closing its doors at
the end of January. Ann Becker, who
passed away in 2002, was the cofounder
of Ann’s Hallmark shop in 1953. The
original store opened on upper Broadway
in the City of Newburgh. As a young
woman Ann worked at various retail locations in the City of Newburgh and gained
the experience she needed to strike out on
her own and expand on her experiences,
and it became a passion for her.
This family business, now owned by
partners Don Becker, Ann’s son, and
Jamie Saffioti, Ann’s nephew, has been
in business in various locations for the
past 60 years. The first expansion took
