Newburgh’s Star Project looks to expand

Newburgh residents may have seen
Mason Wartman on The Ellen DeGeneres
Show, owner of a Philadelphia pizza
shop made famous for its pay-it-forward
policy. This past October, members of
the community group We Are Newburgh
decided to implement Wartman’s concept
here in Newburgh on a bigger scale.
Already 12 Newburgh restaurants and
eateries are participating in a local pay-
it-forward program, which founders
Damian DePauw and Edwin Martinez
have named the Star Project.
DePauw first heard of Wartman’s pay-
it-forward idea years ago, but it wasn’t
until this fall that he teamed up with
Martinez, another member of the We Are
Newburgh community group, to develop
the concept for Newburgh. Customers
of participating Star Project businesses
can choose to donate a monetary amount
towards food for someone in need. This
amount will be posted as a sticky note on a
bulletin board (often with an encouraging
note) which a homeless or needy person
can take and use to redeem for a coffee,
bagel, sandwich, or full meal, depending
