McClinton out of Assembly race
By MARK REYNOLDS mreynolds @ tcnewspapers . com
Sakima McClinton is officially out of the race for the 104th NYS Assembly seat after first failing to obtain the required signatures to get on the ballot for the Republican and Conservative lines and then by not securing the needed signatures to create her own political party . The seat became vacant following the untimely death of Assemblyman Frank Skartados earlier this year and was not filled as it was close to the end of the 2018 legislative term .
The 104th Assembly seat stretches across the
Sakima McClinton cities of Poughkeepsie , Beacon and Newburgh and the Towns of Lloyd , Marlborough and Newburgh .
McClinton ’ s petition signatures were challenged and the NYS Board of Election ultimately determined that she came up short of the required number needed to be on the ballot .
On the Republican line McClinton submitted 344 signatures when 500 were required and for the Conservative line , 48 signatures were required and she submitted 51 , however , after a review , only 26 remained valid and 25 were for another office . McClinton then
tried to gather 1,500 signatures required to head her own political party , The Women in Action Party , but she failed in that effort .
McClinton said , “ it was a valiant effort but that 1,500 was a little much ; I came up a little short on that and that didn ’ t happen with the new party . At this point I ’ m out . I don ’ t have any other suggestions or ideas .”
McClinton said she was upset not with any person but with the process involved to get on the ballot .
“ I felt that anybody who wants to run should be able to make it to the start line ; maybe not the finish line because that comes down to who the people get to vote for , but if you don ’ t even get on the ballot that means you get eliminated before you get to the start line and I think we ’ re built on a society where anybody can run . So if anybody can run , the process shouldn ’ t be so tedious that you get knocked out even if you go to the effort and the things that are laid out for you to do .”
McClinton said potential candidates can find signatures invalidated , “ because it says road instead of street , it says LaGrangeville instead of LaGrange . I had the numbers when it came to the Conservative line but 50 % of them were thrown out for technicalities because the way the form was filled out , not because people didn ’ t sign it ; now I don ’ t have a line at all .”
During McClinton ’ s initial interview with the Mid Hudson Times , she claimed that she had the official endorsements of the Republican Parties of Ulster , Dutchess and Orange counties . Upon further questioning McClinton conceded that she only had verbal support from the heads of these parties because she entered the race after each of the party conventions had taken place .
