Flour shop opens on Liberty Street
By KATELYN CORDERO kcordero @ tcnewspapers . com
The new bakery on Liberty Street has come in with a bang , selling out their entire inventory on opening weekend . Michael Kelly was in shock after the grand opening of his second business on Liberty Street brought in 357 sales .
Kelly opened Liberty Street Bistro in June 2016 , a successful restaurant in the City of Newburgh . He struggled with sourcing artisanal bread for the restaurant . To solve this problem they began making their own bread . When he was given the opportunity he decided to open up the Flour Shop to compliment Liberty Street Bistro , and make up for the lack of a high quality local bakery in the area .
“ We are just trying to fill a need seen in a lot of communities ,” said Kelly . “ Making things with your hands is so uncommon , we are getting back to the artisanal background you don ’ t see very often .”
The building was a labor union from 1922 and abandoned in the 80 ’ s . According to Kelly it was a complete gut job . The building had a good exterior structure but inside it was riddled with termites , walls caving in , plumbing and infrastructure problems . The renovation took Kelly 8 months to complete .
“ The place was a mess when we first started ,” said Kelly . “ We had to do a complete renovation with a number of challenges . It took too long . We had to push our opening back four months .”
Kelly has a long impressive career in culinary arts . He worked in New York City with famous chefs such as Chef Gordon Ramsay and Thomas Keller bringing what he learned through his career into his own businesses . Many of his part-time bakers on staff are from

approved by the Board . Lee and Harvey will now race to finish the final year on the four-year term of Kennedy .
“ Everyone running for office , everyone in office , and everyone who hopes to be in office should take Newburgh very serious ,” said Lee . “ It is our time , and more specifically it is my time to deliver Newburgh ’ s message , that we are not going to be forgotten , abandoned and neglected anymore .”
Harvey believes the issue lies not

New York City , notably his head baker Catie Pedersen .
“[ Catie ] is incredibly detail oriented , she ’ s been doing this since her adolescence ,” said Kelly . “ She has a hand in making a high quality product .”
Pederson has worked with Kelly closely to get the shop ready for their opening . She had been baking her entire life , not unlike her boss Kelly .
For Kelly opening up his own place was a dream since he was 18 years old . It ’ s

with disenfranchising the voters , but with maintaining election law . The 69 signatures under question were not associated with a registered address leading to invalidation by the Board of Elections . The courts have ruled that as long as the person ’ s current residence is in the city of Newburgh the signatures are valid .
“ It is a one-year term and I am doing what I committed to do for the people of the city of Newburgh and to Mayor Kennedy before her passing ,” said Harvey . “ I feel that [ Gay Lee ] is someone that likes overwhelming for him to see how well the shop has done from the start .
“ I have been thinking about opening a place of my own since I was 18 ,” said Kelly . “ It kind of just fell into place over time . I just had to work harder than everyone else . I have been lucky to have great partners and investors that trust me to execute that goal .”
The Flour Shop is open Wednesday through Sunday 7 a . m . to 4 p . m . at 109 Liberty Street .

Lee will be running in the Independence Party and Reform Party Lines . Harvey will run with the Working Families Party Lines . The general election in November will include Lee and Harvey regardless of the primary election outcome .
