The Orange County Veterans Memorial was unveiled on Veterans day in 1987 .
By KATELYN CORDERO kcordero @ tcnewspapers . com

At the Orange County Veterans Memorial stands a life size bronze soldier from the vietnam war , one of many sculptures made by the late Richard Masloski prior to his death on July 26 , 2018 .

The monument at Orange County Veterans Memorial was unveiled on Veterans day in 1987 . It started as a tribute to a single Vietnam veteran , but when residents caught wind of the memorial they decided to make it larger . The monument is in dedication to all Orange County Veterans who lost their lives in World War I , World War II , the Korean War and the Vietnam War . The monument includes 824 names .
Among those who assisted Masloski with the monument was David McTamaney a Vietnam Army Veteran . According to McTamaney the monument was entirely constructed by Masloski . He worked with McTamaney and others in the community to search through old newspapers to get all 824 names . It took nearly a year to get the entire piece finished .
The leaning soldier is standing on the right side of the memorial as a sign of reverential prayer .
“ Richard truly captured the essence of what it was like to be [ in the war ],” said McTamaney .
Each year on Memorial Day a ceremony is held at 3 p . m . at the monument to read off the names of all Orange County Veterans that have passed away .
McTamaney and others in the community are working to have a bench installed next to the monument in honor of Masloski .
Some of Masloski ’ s other monuments in the area include the Town of Wappinger War Memorial , and Lincoln in Peekskill .
Masloski was born in Cornwall on January 31 , 1954 , the son of Joseph and Genevieve Masloski , and brother of Daniel Masloski . He is survived by his lifelong friends Barbara and Rich , along with many cousins and several aunts .
Renowned Sculptor Richard Masloski created the statue at the Orange County Veteran ’ s Memorial .

In Marine Veteran Dan Clarino ’ s account of his brush with death in Vietnam , as told during a concert at The Wall that Heals , he was evacuated in a helicopter , not a plane as reported last week .
Under heavy enemy fire Clarino ’ s Marine unit was being evacuated by helicopters .
As they ran for two helicopters Clarino , thinking the helicopter his fellow Marine and close buddy Mike Cunnion of Mount Vernon , N . Y . was running to was already close to full capacity . He went to the right to board another helicopter .
Clarino watched in horror as he saw his buddy ’ s helicopter hit by enemy fire “ and going down in flames .”
“ And I haven ’ t had a single day that I have not thought about my decision to go right to the other helicopter instead of left ,” he said . “ I lost much of my squad that day .”
