She is expected to return to the job in September. “It’s important city business continues without a bump or a wrinkle,” Kennedy said at a special meeting of the Newburgh City Council Thursday. The city council voted to temporarily appoint Deputy Mayor Regina Angelo to serve as mayor pro tem during Kennedy’s absence in August. The lack of candidates has left the City of Newburgh Civil Service Commission looking to the county for assistance. “All declined the position,” said city Civil Service Commissioner Thomas Murphy, shuffling through papers at a meeting of the commission last week. The job was turned down five months following a county court judge’s decision to allow the City of Newburgh Civil Service Commission to offer an open, competitive exam for the position. The city had asked the Orange County Supreme Court to halt the test after the civil service commission refused to amend testing criteria to allow acting city Police Chief Dan Cameron to take a promotional exam. The commission instead offered an open exam, drawing candidates from around the state with less experience than Cameron, who has served the City of Newburgh Police Department for 20 years. “What is the next step in the process?” asked Commissioner Vera Best. “The first step would be to inquire from the county Continued on page 3
