Café planned for Downing Park shelter house
By SHANTAL RILEY

Downing Park will soon have its very
own café. To be located inside the park
shelter house, the new café will be set
in one the most picturesque parts of the
city.
“Our goal is to bring recreation back
to the park,” said café proprietor Stephen
Sinnott.
The park was the picture of summer
on a late afternoon earlier this month.
Weeping willows swayed in a light breeze
and baby ducklings huddled at the edge
of Polly Pond. A few snapping turtles
craned their necks above the water’s
surface not far away.
The City of Newburgh has agreed to
sign a lease agreement for Sinnott and
his wife Katie to operate the Olmstead
Vaux Shelter House Café from inside the
80-year-old stone building.
The goal is to have the café up and
running sometime in the fall, Sinnott
said. The café will serve artisanal coffee,
as well as teas, pastries and ice cream.
