A new art exhibit celebrates trees , their strength and beauty . “ Trees - Earth ’ s Best Friends : Celebrating Arbor Day and Earth Day ” is currently on exhibit in the lobby of the City of Newburgh Department of Code Compliance and the Newburgh Free Library .
“ The focus here is urban forestry ,” said Deborah Dresser , a member of the city ’ s Conservation Advisory Council , speaking at the exhibit this month . Dresser noted the City of Newburgh has been a “ Tree City USA Community ” since 2005 .
About two dozen pieces of artwork are on display by students participating in the 21st Century and Empire State afterschool programs . The programs provide homework help , tutoring and enrichment activities including performing and fine arts . “ This helps our young people to understand the value of trees ,” Dresser said , speaking on the art project .
The artwork depicts trees in their various states of splendor . Some boast trees in minimalist graphic designs . Others feature trees colored in bright primary colors . Another dozen or so student paintings and photography are hung on the walls outside the library across the street .
