3 Mid Hudson Times, Wednesday, April 13, 2016 Stop-the-violence forum set for Thursday The City of Newburgh will host a second community forum to brainstorm ways to address violence taking place in the city. The public forum will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Boys and Girls Club of Newburgh on Liberty Street. “This is such a critical issue for us,” said Newburgh Mayor Judy Kennedy on Monday. Kennedy invited all concerned citizens and members of the religious community to attend the event. Brainstorming sessions will focus on coming up with community solutions, said Kennedy. “How can we come together and take the city back from criminals?” she asked. “Bring your ideas so that we can get something done here.” A small number of people are committing the overwhelming share of crimes in the City of Newburgh, said City Manager Michael Ciaravino at city hall Monday. “In many instances, we know who committed these heinous acts,” he said, but people are afraid to come forward. A previous meeting, held days following the shooting death of Glenton Wright on Benkard Avenue, was focused partly on the community’s role in keeping the streets safe. At the forum, city police Chief Dan Cameron discussed community policing, the city’s Group Violence Intervention Program and a plan to add more surveillance video cameras to the city’s existing network of cameras. The police chief said looking the other way and not reporting crime is the same as accepting it. The Boys and Girls Club of Newburgh is located at 285 Liberty Street. Newburgh advances to round 3 of Super School Project By SHANTAL RILEY [email protected] The Newburgh Enlarged City School District has made it to round three of the XQ Super School Project. The district is one step closer to winning a $10 million grant to design an innovative, new high school. The school district submitted a project proposal for a new, high-school model earlier this year. News of the district’s advancement to the next level of the contest was announced last week. “This was a huge feat and included hundreds of stakeholders,” said Superintendent of Schools Roberto Padilla on Friday. “We competed against thousands of school districts and now, today, we are among a small group of districts across the country who dare to rethink education.” The XQ Super School Project is a competitive initiative challenging students, teachers and communities to re-imagine high schools that are modern, innovative and able to prepare students for life, college and the new economy. The project is funded by the Emerson Collective, founded by Steve Jobs’ widow Laurene Powell Jobs. The district’s redesign proposal calls for $2 million in funding per year over five years. The next phase of the project is to develop tangible high school designs, the district states. The school district must submit materials for the “develop” phase of the project by May 23.
