It started with the shooting of an
11-year-old girl as she was getting out
of a cab with her mother on Benkard
Avenue in February. A month later,
51-year-old Glenton Wright was shot
dead in front of his young son on the
same block.
“I’m begging you all to put down these
guns,” pleaded his widow Paula Cook
Wright, surrounded by her four children last Thursday.

Standing with his right hand on a Bible,
Bruce Campbell was sworn in as the
Town of Newburgh chief of police.
“I will faithfully discharge the duties of
the Office of the Town of Newburgh Chief
of Police, according to the best of my ability, so help me God,” Campbell repeated
after town Justice Richard Clarino.
Town of Newburgh police officers lined
the walls, and friends and family filled
seats at the swearing-in ceremony, held
at Town Hall Monday night. “I know he’ll
make an excellent chief,” Clarino told the
audience.
Campbell has served as acting police
chief since Chief Michael Clancy retired
in January. He became deputy police
chief in 2012. Prior to this, he worked at
the City of Newburgh Police Department
