City to mark 50th anniversary of King assassination
The City of Newburgh will mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Rev . Dr . Martin Luther King on Wednesday with a ceremony at the future park that will bear his name and a program at the Newburgh Free Library .
The Rev . Dr . Martin Luther King Jr . Memorial Park will be located on the hillside at the intersection of Colden Street ( Dickie Peterson Way ) and Water Street ( the Rev . Dr . Martin Luther King Jr . Boulevard ), where there currently sits a bust of the slain civil rights leader . The park will also contain the remains from the African-American burial ground , found at the construction site of the City of Newburgh Courthouse in 2008 .
More than 100 remains were unearthed at the site , which had been a graveyard for African Americans through the mid-19th Century . The remains were eventually sent to SUNY New Paltz for care and study . Now they will be returned to Newburgh .
The City of Newburgh hired The Chazen Company in September 2017 to draft conceptual designs for the Rev . Dr . Martin Luther King , Jr . Park , where the Rev . Dr . Martin Luther King Jr . Monument will be relocated in the center of a sacred memorial park setting , with a columbarium around which the sacred remains from The Colored Burial Ground will be reinterred , according to Pamela
Rev . Dr . Martin Luther King Jr . Monument will be the centerpiece of the Colored Burial Ground .
Community leaders prayed at the base of the monument in August , 2013 .
Krizek , a member of the of the Colored Burial Ground Advisory Committee that was chaired by Dickie Peterson from its inception until his death last year . Other members of the committee have included Dr . Benilda Jones , Ed McCarthy and Fr . William Scafidi .
At 4:30 p . m . on Wednesday , a memorial spray will be placed on the King , Monument , which was created by Sculptor David Frech and dedicated in 2007 . At that time , the public will be invited to hear about the plans for the park .
At 5:30 p . m ., at the Newburgh Free Library the Black History Committee of the Mid Hudson Valley will host a multi-disciplinary , collaborative event , MLK50 : The Dream Lives On .
The program will feature political , scholarly and spiritual reflections of the historical significance of Dr . King ’ s tenancy as leader of the American Civil Rights Movement . Led by Mrs . Sadie Tallie , President of the Black History Committee of the Mid Hudson Valley , the event is in partnership with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity KUL Chapter , Black Pioneers , Christian Ministerial Fellowship , Newburgh Human Rights Commission , NAACP of Newburgh-Highland Falls , Newburgh Enlarged City School District , Newburgh Free Library , and Restorative Justice Center for Restorative Justice .
“ Fifty years has produced political and spiritual leaders ; scholars ; professional doctors , lawyers and educators ;
community advocates and volunteers ; mothers and fathers ; and men , women and children who have been influenced , inspired and transformed by Dr . King ”, said Mrs . Tallie .
The Black History Committee of the Mid Hudson Valley will officially launch the “ Historical Book of Black History ” project to tell history , highlight accomplishments and record the African American experience of Newburgh ’ s Black residents . My Brothers Keeper Scholars of the Newburgh School District will read stories of Newburgh ’ s African American elders .
