MID-COUNTY IN THE COMMUNITY Fun for all ages: disc golf in Cologne In July 2017, the Cologne Lions installed a new disc golf course at Lions Park. Mid- County’s Financial Controller, Brandon Leifer- mann, designed the course and helped install it, along with Lions volunteers and other disc golf players. Brandon Leifermann The Lions Club of Cologne purchased ad- ditional acreage at Lions Park about five years ago. The expansion included wetland and wooded areas that were not easily accessi- ble, and were not being used by park visitors. The Lions had been searching for a way to incorporate this area into recreational use. Lions Club member Roger Storms, along with other Lions Club members, discussed a disc golf course as an option. While Storms was at Mid-County Coop one day, he began talk- ing with Diane Beckrich and Julie Clemensen about the park ex- pansion and the disc golf idea. They quickly referred Storms to Brandon who is an avid disc golf player. The two began talking, and Leifermann agreed to help with the project. Initially, Brandon walked the park assessing the best route and tee locations. Trees and other natural features provided challeng- es to work with for this nine-hole course. Once Brandon staked an initial route, he invited some fellow disc golf enthusiasts to play it. After the trial run, a few minor adjustments were made, and then the Lions Club headed up the installation. “The Lions are a service organization, so we look for ways to serve the community and meet their needs. The disc golf course provides a new recreational option for people of all ages.” Storms explained, “I see a lot of fathers and daughters out here playing.” The disc golf course draws people from the Cologne commu- nity and the surrounding area. And the course is getting great reviews from local players, disc golf enthusiasts, and other area Lions clubs. A local brewing company recently proposed hosting a disc golf tournament at the park this spring. While the details are still being finalized, this opportunity would help introduce the disc golf game to the local community and introduce the course to a broader audience. The disc golf course at Lions Park is free and accessible to ev- eryone. Brandon and fellow disc golf players donated a variety of discs to the park. Park visitors who do not have the right discs can find a red box attached to the shelter containing complimentary discs to use. Just remember to put them back for the next players. The Lions provided the equipment and worked alongside Brandon and other volunteers over two to three work sessions.
