Operated by the Western Hennepin County Pioneer Association (WHCPA), the museum aims to preserve details about the area’s past challenges – such as confl ict with Native Americans, disease, and economic downturns – and to remember how citizens prevailed despite hardship. In the 1920s, Long Lake was a popular place for Twin Cities residents to visit, as there were lakeside cabins and good spots to fi sh and swim. According to longlakeliving. org, a recent water quality report showed that “Long Lake continues to be one of the best lakes in the region for water quality, recreational opportunities, and nurturing fi sh.” 3. The deepest part of the water in Long Lake is 33 feet, and the total size of the lake is about 284 acres, the city’s website noted. 4. Long Lake’s population was 1,768 as of the 2010 census. The small community (just one mile in size) is completely surrounded by the City of Orono, and is part of the Orono School District. 5. The city’s website reports that Green Isle has one the newest and most advanced water and wastewater systems in the area. 2. Due to growth and new housing development, a charter school was created in Green Isle, welcoming students for the fi rst time in fall 2005. Green Isle Community School is tuition-free and features an integrated gifted and talented program. 3. Green Isle’s population in 2010 was 559, which is up from 334 in 2000. 4. The name Green Isle refers to Ireland, “the Emerald Isle.” It was suggested by Irish immigrant Christopher Dolan. 5. The community has a baseball team called the Green Isle Irish. Five fun facts about Waverly 1. The city of Waverly is growing. According to CensusViewer, the population went from 778 people in 2000 to 1,357 in 2010 – a change of almost 75 percent. 2. Incomes in Waverly are rising. City-Data. com reports that the estimated median household income in Waverly was $75,184 in 2016, compared to $52,000 in 2000. (Statewide, the 2016 median was $65,599.) 3. Waverly was named after a community in Tioga County, New York. Its original name was Waverly Mills, and the name offi cially became simply “Waverly” in 1899. 4. Waverly is a popular place to build a home. The city issued a total of 42 new home construction permits in 2017. This is consistent with an upward trend the past fi ve years – three new home permits were issued in 2013, four in 2014, 12 in 2015, and 21 in 2016. 5. Cologne (named after Cologne, Germany) started out as two villages – Benton and Cologne. According to the city website, Benton merged into the Village of Cologne in 1891, but wasn’t offi cially annexed into the city until the 1970s. 2. Cologne has several buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Paul Mohrbacher House from 1880, the Philip Guettler House from 1902, and the John Knotz House from 1905. 3. Two famous people who have visited Cologne include Charles Lindberg (during his campaign for governor in 1918), and George H.W. Bush (while campaigning for vice president in 1984). 4. In 1939, the community was the subject of a short fi lm called “Cologne: From the Diary of Ray and Esther.” The fi lm is one of only a few amateur productions to be included on the National Film Registry. 5. The population of Cologne has tripled in the past few decades. In 1990, there were 563 people living in the community; by 2010, that number had jumped to 1,519.
