Year End Recognition Descriptions C.W. “Bill” Otto Memorial This award recognizes the most outstanding chapter in the Michigan Junior Chamber. The Lansing Jaycees established this award in 1954 as part of a program recognizing C.W. Otto for his efforts in the growth and promotion of the Jaycees in Michigan. While Henry Giessenbier spearheaded the birth of the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce, C.W. "Bill" Otto is remembered as the founder of the Lansing Jaycees and "father" of the Michigan Junior Chamber of Commerce. Henry Giessenbier Memorial Award Henry Giessenbier Jr. (1892-1935) was the founder and first President of The United States Junior Chamber, established in 1920. He conceived the idea of a young person’s organization dedicated to personal and professional development of its members. The Michigan Junior Chamber annually recognizes chapters that have done the best job in developing “the WHOLE member through the WHOLE chapter.” Mark Pankner Award The Mark Pankner Award is named in honor of Mark Pankner, who served as Executive Director of the Michigan Junior Chamber from 1976 to 1981, and is presented each year to the most outstanding Executive Committee Member. Betty Sexton Award The Betty Sexton award is presented annually to an Outstanding Michigan Junior Chamber Statewide Vice President. The award is named in honor Betty Sexton, who served as the first President of the Michigan Junior Chamber Auxiliary in 1944-45. R. Bradley Trafton Memorial Award Recognizes your most outstanding appointed state officers this award is named in honor of R. Bradley Trafton, a past USJC staff officer from New Hampshire. He also served as State President, Internal Vice President, and Chaplain for the New Hampshire Jaycees. Recipients of this award may be submitted on behalf of Michigan for consideration by the USJC’s. Sandy K. Luikes Memorial Award Sandy joined the Wyoming Jaycees in April 1993, served as District C-2 Director in 1997-98 and as Region C Director in 1999. This award is presented to up to three (3) outstanding state District Directors. Recipients may be nominated for the USJC M. Keith Upson Memorial award. Seiji Horiuchi Memorial Award The Seiji Horiuchi Memorial award is presented annually to up to five (5) outstanding State Chairpersons/Program Managers in the state of Michigan. Recipients of this award may be nominated for the Seiji Horiuchi Memorial Award at the National Level. Martin P. Luthy Memorial Award Named in honor of Martin P. Luthy, the first president of the Michigan Junior Chamber in 1925-26. Luthy lived to the age of 94, when he passed away in Newton Highlands, Massachusetts. Luthy is interred at a Chicago area cemetery. Selected recipients are eligible to become candidates for the USJC Charles Kulp Jr. Memorial award. Following an extensive application and interview process with past MIJC state presidents, recommendations are made to the MIJC President on worthy recipients. The Martin P. Luthy Memorial award is presented annually to up to ten (10) of the most outstanding Local Presidents in the state. David Lichwala Memorial Award The David Lichwala Memorial award is presented annually to up to twenty (20) outstanding Local Presidents in the state. Named in honor of David Lichwala from Dearborn, who served as the Michigan Junior Chamber Management Development Vice President in 1985-86, and as Editor of the Michigander in 1987-88. David Lichwala passed away after a short illness, at the age of 33 in 1990. Doc Huldin Memorial Award The Dr. Raymond E. "Doc" Huldin Memorial award is presented annually to the most outstanding Michigan JCI Senator, who remains an active and enrolled member of a local chapter. The selection is based on nominations received from local chapters. The award is named in honor of Raymond E. "Doc" Huldin, #3658, the first Michigan JCI Senate president 1973-74. Paul. D. Ballinger Website Award The Paul D. Ballinger Website Award is presented annually to the chapter who has the most outstanding chapter website. It is named in honor of Paul D. Ballinger, who served as the Michigan Junior Chamber Executive Director from 1994 – 2003. Pamela Cunningham Memorial Award Named in honor of former MIJC Press Secretary Pamela Cunningham, a dynamic member of the Howell Jaycee Women and Howell Jaycees. She was one of the first women sworn into the Junior Chamber after the 1984 merger of the two organizations. She served the Michigan Junior Chamber in many other capacities and was killed in a traffic accident in 1990. This award recognizes outstanding implementation of public relations on a Chapter project (not on an overall PR program). Entries are judged for quantity, quality, and innovation in PR results. Thom Stark Memorial Award Named in honor of Thom Stark, an Ypsilanti Area Jaycee. He served the chapter in multiple roles, including director, Management VP and Membership VP, guiding the chapter to growth and their Blue Chip. While preparing to run for the office of chapter President, Thom’s life was taken in a tragic car accident. The award recognizes only up to 10 Outstanding Local Vice Presidents in the state. Robert J. Peacock Memorial Award st Presented annually to the top membership recruiter in the state, this award is named in honor of our 81 president.
