Coronavirus, the beginnings:

China informs the World Health Organisation of a number of cases of a pneumonia-like disease, the cause of which is unknown. The origin of the disease is being investigated. The outbreak is detected in a food market in Wuhan (Hubei province), the quarantined city and controls are introduced at the local airport. Scientists exclude immediately SARS (from severe acute English Respiratory syndrome or Sindrome Respiratoria Acuta Grave), MERS (from English Middle East Respiratory syndrome) and avian influence.

7th January 2020

The Chinese Health Commission confirms that it has identified a new type of virus, namely a Coronavirus, the same family as the flu, Sars and Mers. The new coronavirus is "2019-nCoV".

11th January 2020: first alert!

Confirmed the first coronavirus victim in China. The contagion spreads immediately to the Asian continent.

30th January 2020: People are starting to panic!

The OMS declares the global emergency. What happens in 20 days? At the end of January, several countries begin to evacuate citizens from China. France begins. Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom follow the example. It opens a gap to the virus in Europe. Small clusters starting to emerge in France, the UK and Sweden. Germany reports the first case of internal transmission. Also on 30 January the news of the first two cases confirmed also in Italy: these are two Chinese tourists who have been hospitalized in isolation at the hospital “Spallanzani”.

21st February 2020: it came here to Italy!

Between 21st and 22nd February, Italy found itself vulnerable: first infected. In the following days, there are hundreds of positive cases with the major outbreaks in Lodi and Veneto. There are more and more meetings between the Prime Count, the health authorities, the Civil Protection. In the evening between 22nd and 23rd the Council of Ministers adopts a decree to combat the transmission of coronavirus.

7th/10th March 2020

The first problems begin to arrive!

New decree in Italy, which limits travel to and from the areas most affected by the contagion: Lombardy and 14 other provinces between Piedmont, Veneto, Emilia Romagna, Marche. With a new measure, on March 10th, the whole of Italy becomes a red zone. EU President Ursula announces a €25 billion fund "supporting the health system, SMEs, the labour market and the most vulnerable parts of the economy", affected by the epidemic.

11th March 2020

The world begins to go into crisis!

The WHO has declared coronavirus a pandemic: the bulletin records more than 118,000 cases in 114 countries of the world, with a death toll of 4,291. The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, has warned that some 58 million people, almost 70% of the German population, are at risk of contracting coronavirus. In Spain, too, infections are growing: there are almost 3,000. Catalonia is home to 70,000 people.
