Into the viral storm

Francesco A.

The spread of coronavirus has become pandemic and it has been quickly understood that it is more than just a bad flu. The symptoms are severe. The virus causes pneumonia and creates respiratory attacks that require oxygen and intensive care. The mortality rate is very high, especially in the elderly or in presence of other pathologies. In this serious emergency situation, to avoid the spread and not to put hospitals under stress, most Governments ordered the closure of schools and of all non priority activities, inviting the population to stay at home to avoid gatherings.

The data in Italy are worrying. Italian Ministry of Health estimated 97,689 infected and 10,779 dead. The data is constantly growing and according to Burioni, an Italian physician and Professor of Microbiology and Virology at San Raffaele University of Milan, the spread has not yet reached its maximum peak. However, the restrictive measures are worsening the economic situation. In absence of work, almost 2.7 million Italians are at risk of poverty, while companies are without liquidity of money. Nicola Gratteri, head of the dda of Catanzaro, has raised the alarm that the organized crime is taking advantage of the situation to lend usury money and exploiting cheap labor, even for illegal business.

It is important to continue these containment measures to avoid other hotbeds and to get out of this health and social emergency as soon as possible. As the Pope said, only if we row the boat all together we will get out of this viral storm.
