AN INDEPENDENT SUPPLEMENT BY MIA MEDIA & COMMUNICATIONS GROUP TO THE SUN SENTINEL
BB13
Panorama
By Ashley Andrews
The scintillating and pulsating music
of the steel pan has always played a
significant role in the Miami Broward
Carnival narrative.
“Pan is the rhythm that fuels the
lifeblood that flows through the heart of
Carnival,” says Dexter Bleasdell,
Steelband Coordinator.
Originating in Trinidad and Tobago,
the steelpan is virtually the only new
weekend long. This steel orchestra band
is notably the best orchestra of its
kind.Desperadoes has had a long history
of musical genius being founded in
Laventille, Trinidad in 1945. Originally
named the Dead End, the orchestra is
notorious for winning the National
Steelband Panorama competition a
record 11 times since its inception! The
award-winning orchestra has performed
competing for the 2016 Miami Broward
Carnival Steel Band of the Year title at
this year’s Panorama.
“Pan is to carnival like water is to fish;
it’s a survival thing. As they say, it’s the
last created musical instrument that
brings pride and joy to a nation. It’s like
reggae to Jamaica, classical music to
Europeans; it is deeply rooted in our
culture and the world is better for it.”

instrument invented in the 20th century.
Made from industrial waste, the steel
pan is, at its surface, a simple instrument
that evokes such quality and jovial
sounds.
This year, Carnival attendees are in
for a musical treat as Trinidad and
Tobago’s 2015 Pan Champion Band,
Desperadoes (“Despers”) will be taking
the Miami Broward Carnival stage all
globally from Carnegie Hall in New York
to stages around India, Africa, China and
England.
In addition to a special guest
performance by Despers, Karibbean
Knights Steel Orchestra, Lauderhill Steel
Ensemble Inc, Melo Groove Steel
Orchestra Inc, 2015 Winner Pantastik
Steel Orchestra, Resurrection Steel
Orchestra and Sticks n Tones will all be
Sydney Roberts, Vice Chair for Miami

Catch Desperadoes, along with all
the other amazing pan orchestras, as
