MHC Dish From the Pitch 2014 Week 6 | Page 9

Jakubowski has more on this, “talk to your teammates. It’s a huge help to know when you’re free to shoot, if someone’s in position to hook, if you’re double teamed, if your teammate is open, etc. You never see everything.”

Clearly assisting teammates by talking with them can help, but the same is true of your mark as well. Get to know your defender, suggest both “Jake” and Tim, it will help you figure out their strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, you will likely be spending plenty of time hanging out while the play is on the other side of the field, why not have fun, it’s the MHC way!

Defense

It seems counter-intuitive to talk about defense when discussing the offensive juggernaut that is Full Forward. At the same time, it makes sense. The moment that a fullback or goalie takes possession, you are effectively on defense.

If you can get a hook or block-down, that can be turned into points or goals. Also, by merely hampering a fullback or goalie while they are trying to get space for a clear can shorten that clear from 70m down to 30m or less - that’s pointing territory for your mids and half forwards. Make the effort to never let any play go uncontested; that attitude is how those highlight reel plays happen.

Fullbacks are brutish thugs - proud of that fact; the Full Forwards are also thugs, just more savvy and cunning. If you want the glory that comes from scoring goals, practice your basics. Get good with your catches and pickups. Learn to use all your weapons. Study the opposition and have a plan in place. Then, sling that sliotar into the back of the next and claim the glory that is yours for the taking!
