U7 Warriors Emerge “Through the Foggy Dew”

by AIslinn Leonard

As the ominous fog began to lift over the pitch early Sunday morning, the U7 warriors trudged through the mud to meet their marks. The A and B groups were combined this misty morning resulting in a competitive and tough match for all highlighted by some David vs. Goliath style battles and a bit of nature study, as well.

Finn Hill and Ivan Baker marked up during the third quarter and found a fascinating worm in the mucky turf as the ball sailed over their heads. But they managed to get back into play and battle for possession of the sliotar. Ivan won the battle, hitting the ball down the line, but Finn used his defensive body positioning to get between his opponent and the goal effectively saving his team from a sliotar in the back of the net.

Eva Kane was a defensive powerhouse fearlessly covering an entire zone of the pitch. She was aggressive regardless of who she was marking and ran circles around everyone. Both Ivan Baker and Natalie Meller boldly charged through opponents almost twice their size and age, proving to everyone at the pitch that the size of the hurler means nothing when you’ve got heart and determination.

This was a match riddled with injuries, but toughness is never in short supply in this group. Louis Kartz, Antoinette Brilz, Lorelei Kielley, and Nate Giese all received pretty good knocks, but valiantly made their way through the end of the match. The tenacity of these hurlers should be a model for all.

Although on different fields, the Knudson brothers, Mark and Luke, play the same game. With giant smiles on their faces, they tear up the field smacking the ball with reckless abandon. Luke, shy to start, has surfaced as a true competitor on the Mini Mite field. And in only her second week Chloe Fortier is already showing signs of becoming another formidable Fortier on the field.
