MHC Dish From the Pitch 2014 Week 4 | Page 11

The second quarter proved to be the power of the points with two quick points for Brocach by Raasch and Darragh McNamara; Slim’s quickly responded with a point of their own. Despite the quick points, it seemed that the new definition of the quarter was going to be the dominion of the defense. Play after play left both offenses frustrated and the defenses out of breath and hoping for a reprieve. Bandit Kyle Manderscheid battled hard to keep his team in control of the ball while the Slaintes were not so shocked that their own Chris Bauer did not give his mark a chance to breathe let alone get a good hit off. It was Brocach’s defense that was finally pardoned thanks to another point from Gilbert. When the whistle blew to end the half, the Brocach Bandits led 1-6 (9) the Slim McGinn’s Slaintes 2-1 (7), but not by much.

Quarter three could not be more entertaining and it started yet again with a quick point by Brocach and another on its heels from Slim’s Danny Mac to negate it. Another assault on the Slim’s defense left its defenders busy, but they took it in stride and continued to protect the goal. Soon enough, the pressure reversed, especially thanks to the intensity of Slim’s Horst Burmeister and it was the Bandits that found themselves on the defensive, literally. An amazingly controlled stop by Bandit Alec Fortier saved his team from having to recover three points. Thanks to that stop, the epic passing would begin with Bandit Spencer Kane sending a perfect pass to Meyers. Slim’s Aly Wolf had an amazing stop of her own and kept three points off the board for Brocach. Back to back points by Mike Stuht increased Brocach’s lead, which was again answered with a point from Danny Mac. Despite an amazing puck out from Fortier, Slim’s was the next to score. Slim’s captain Rob McCommons put up a back-to-back point/goal combination for a total of four points to end the third quarter with a lead for his team 3-4 (13) to Brocach’s 1-9 (12).

Wanting to capitalize on the slight lead created at the end of the third quarter, Slim’s Tom Hereley put up a quick point in the hopes of beginning a reign of points for his team. A steal by Raasch would end those hopes as it led to a point for Brocach from Stuht. Another shot on the Slaintes appeared to fall short but Mike Dvorak would not waste the opportunity and was ready and doubled the ball in for the Bandits. The Slaintes revved up their play so that they could stay in the game, knowing it was getting tighter and tighter and succeeded in scoring another point. A back to back assault on the Slaintes included a pass from Brocach’s captain, Shawn “Boston” Connolly, to Shannon Meller, who lived up to his notoriety for using his feet to score as much as his stick, and a quick point from captain Gilbert. The Slaintes knew they needed a goal for the win and knew they had very little time left to get it, and despite their extraordinary efforts, the Bandit’s defense kept victory out of their grasps as the final whistle blew. Brocach pulled out of the match with a two point win 2-11 (17) over a tough opponent, Slim McGinn’s 3-6 (15), who despite the loss, confirmed the fear that the beastly full-back line and goalie are not so easily scored on.
