MHC Dish From the Pitch 2014 Week 1 | Page 20

Through the Eyes of a Rookie

From Opening Day to Championships (whether or not he plays), we’ll be talking to Andrew Martins, and getting a fresh look at the club through the eyes of someone who is new to our sport!

Andrew is playing for the Shamrock Club for his first year and finished his first game with a win! He got his start in the club through Brendan Murphy, who he knows through Celtic Studies classes at UWM, and figured he’d give the sport a shot. He didn’t have too much of a problem with rookie camp, learned the basics and got through the test, pretty much what you would expect from learning a new sport, and felt pretty prepared for Opening Day, although the anticipation made it a little scary. Luckily, once he got to the pitch, the jitters evaporated. According to Andrew, watching others play and getting advice on field positioning and being an offensive player was helpful, but actually being in the game and reacting to the plays around him were what really got his mind off of his worries. His goal for the season is a lot more humble than most, not a word about winning a championship! Instead, Andrew hopes to “gain a better understanding of hurling, and become an effective player”, something we can all take a lesson from, and a goal we know will be achieved!
