This term has seen the start of the exciting new Mastering Number Programme , a major new initiative from the NCETM and Maths Hubs aimed at strengthening the understanding of number , and fluency with number facts , among children in the first three years of school . More than 160 primary schools across our hub area signed up this year and this is what some of our participants had to say about the programme so far .
I was fortunate enough to go and see Mastering Number being taught in Reception last week and it was great . The children were subitising effectively and the atmosphere was very positive - children were very engaged and happy !
I have found the planning really easy to follow and the slides are really good . Many of the parents have commented that their children are using a lot more mathematical language at home and are talking about how different numbers are made up .
The children are thoroughly enjoying the sessions and particularly enjoyed ' being detectives ' and identifying the missing numbers in a staircase pattern . I think the lessons have been extremely beneficial for the children ' s mathematical language .
