Nancy Morejón , the first Black woman to win Cuba ’ s National Literature Prize , is one of the best known ( outside of the U . S ) and most widely translated Cuban poets of the past half century . A protege of Nicolas Guillen , Morejón has been called Cuba ’ s Maya Angelou , Her work also has been compared to that of Langston Hughes .
GLORIA ROLANDO
Gloria Rolando is a Cuban filmmaker , screenwriter and director . Her films tell stories of the struggles of Afro Cubans for survival and respect . In 2019 , she was named a member of the U . S . Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences , in the category of directors .
CIMAFUNK
Cimafunk is an Afro Cuban musician , songwriter and singer . Billboard magazine named him one of “ 10 Latin Artists to Watch in 2019 .” During a 2018 visit to Havana , Will Smith made an impromptu appearance onstage to perform alongside Cimafunk , who has been called “ the Cuban James Brown .”
