A smattering of his work , “ Independent Liberia , 1950- 1952 ”, is included in the current exhibition of 35 former photographers of Black Star Publishing , “ Stories from the Picture Press : Black Star Publishing Co . and The Canadian Press ” at The Image Centre at Toronto Metropolitan University in Toronto , Canada .
Davis went to Ethiopia to photograph and interview Emperor Haile Selassie for the cover story for Ebony ’ s fifth anniversary issue , which was published in November 1950 .
“ I always thought there should be an exhibition of his work , something that everyone should see ,” Dorothy Davis said . Her father ’ s photos covered the history of several African countries including Liberia , Tunisia and Nigeria .
Some of Griff Davis ’ photographs are currently on exhibit at the Image Center in Toronto , Canada and Radio France in Paris , France and the Museum of Broadway , in New York . Five of his photographs can be found in the Library Center of the U . S . Embassy , in Monrovia , Liberia . And a photograph of Thurgood Marshall when he was chief counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund is in the U . S . Supreme Court Archives .
Upcoming photo exhibits that include Griff Davis photographs will be in New York City and Salinas , California in 2024 .
“ All of my effort has helped me visualize this moment ,” Davis said of her father ’ s photographs . “ Sharing these stories that are untold through his work is important - his work puts us ( Black Americans ) back into the picture .”
