Cuba ’ s New Constitution
A SOBERING AND REVEALING PERSPECTIVE

HAVANA – We recently visited Cuba as members of a small , fact-finding group that included journalists , lawyers , social activists and academics . It was an honor to be invited by the distinguished Morgan State University School of Global Journalism to experience the island nation , some of its institutions and its people .
It is our history of observing and interacting with foreign communities and institutions and , over many years , developing an appreciation for the difficult work involved in both struggle and progress that made this visit especially sobering , provocative , and revealing .
During our visit , we focused primarily on Cuba ’ s constitution and its courts . The Republic of Cuba is a proud island nation that sits just 93 miles off the southern tip of Florida . With a population of over 11 million people , Cuba has a long history of colonialism and revolution .
