Sen. Walter Mondale’ s presidential campaign’ s failure to engage Blacks and other marginalized voters more effectively, told an audience that the campaign was run by“ smart-ass white boys who think they know it all.”
Young, now in his 90s, later said he regretted his choice of words, but not the intent of the message.
In addition to those kinds of exciting moments, professional skills training, workshops and seminars— and the organization’ s annual awards ceremonies— what the NABJ convention has come to mean to so many is its family reunion feel. It’ s an annual opportunity to catch up with friends, former colleagues— and seeing the children of friends and colleagues who have joined the“ family business.” We laugh, share stories, counsel, console and celebrate with one another.
While last year was the 50th anniversary of the birth of the NABJ, I am delighted to celebrate this year’ s semicentennial of the NABJ Convention in the pages of this book— and at a NABJ Convention that has a special significance for me. schools and ultimately to the deanship of Morgan State University’ s School of Global Journalism & Communication, I will be inducted into the NABJ Hall of Fame.
I am honored to reach such a pinnacle in this landmark year for the National Association of Black Journalists. n
